5-3-11  The Pune police have beefed up security for United States (US) and Jewish expatriates in the city in the backdrop of Osama bin Laden’s death in Pakistan on Sunday.

Deputy commissioner of police (special branch), Makarand Ranade, told DNA that there are 1,000 US and Jewish expatriates in Pune. “We have beefed up security in all areas where they work and stay. We have also alerted all high-end hotels,” he said.

According to Ranade, the police have increased security at the Ohel David Synagogue (Lal Deval) on Ambedkar Road and the Osho International Meditation Resort in Koregaon Park.

Ranade said, “After bin Laden’s killing in Pakistan, a high alert has been sounded all over the country. We have beefed up security in prominent places in the city.”

A police officer at the foreigners registration office, on condition of anonymity, told DNA, “We cross-check the antecedents of all foreign students who visit Pune. Presently, there is nothing untoward in the city.”
