Southern Illinois University silences "offensive" Jingle Bells, and other holiday music

12-10-2010  CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas, but some festive and familiar holiday sounds on the SIU campus were silenced.

Administrators say that's because they received complaints about the Christmas carols coming from the Pulliam Hall bell tower.

"I miss the Christmas music," said SIU student John Piencak. "It was really cold and walked out of my class to my car and I heard ("Jingle Bells"). It made me happy."

But it didn't make everyone happy.

"We took the music off the clock tower as a result of some complaints we received that religious music was offensive to non-Christians," said SIU Chancellor Rita Cheng.

That leaves only three options: 1) keep the generic non-holiday chimes that sound year round, 2) go with only holiday neutral songs, or 3) incorporate music from other religious holidays of the season.

"Everybody this time of year is in the giving mood, and in high spirits. We don't want to dampen that," said Cheng. "But we want to be sensitive that there are people from all over the world on the Carbondale campus from many different religions, and we want to be more inclusive."

SIU administrators say they'll start playing secular holiday songs Friday until a more multi-cultural mix is put together that includes songs from other faiths playing alongside Christian holiday favorites.

Newsflash for the intellectually-challenged, politically-correct types at Southern Illinois University. Jingle Bells is not religious. It is not a Christian Christmas Carol.

What a bunch of humourless dolts this lot are!

The same story is on Faux News. The comments make interesting reading. Not one person has figured out the most likely religious beliefs of the complainant, or if they have, Fox Noise has censored it.

Have anyone heard "Jingle Bells" rendition by baawaawaa stinkysand? IT is the most AWEFUL thing I've heard in my life!!

Most of the Christmas songs that I hear on the radio, only few of 'em mention Christ. I think that number is probably 5% or so.

Let's not celebrate Independence Day too, cause that hurts the wickedy witch queen's feelings at the Buck'nhump Palace!

Can someone please tell me what other secret holidays fall during Christmas? I am too lazy to research all that by my own! Tongue out

If you have three kids, you just don't jumbled up  their birth dates and celebrate all at once, just to get free clowns, cakes  and bagel deals at the bagel-huts!

??According to one Satanic Holiday calendar, Christmas eve is the occasion for the "Demon Revels" where an infant male is sacrificed and body parts are given out as gifts.

Maybe the schools will start teaching kids to celebrate this too, just for equal time.  "Mom, why is there a billy goat tied up in the school play yard?"
