Fiji rocks post-Colonial Empire
It seems, bad habits die hard.
Former British Colonies can't stand the idea that the people of Fiji had the courage to exercise their otherwise meaningless independence.
The Commonwealth, an association of mostly former British colonial territories, suspended Fiji on Friday after a bloodless military coup this week that has been widely condemned.
"Fiji's military regime should forthwith be suspended from the councils of the Commonwealth," the group's Secretary-General Don McKinnon said in a statement.
McKinnon, who said he hoped to travel to Fiji in the near future to press for a return to democracy, said the suspension decision had been taken unanimously by a meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group. The Commonwealth is an association of 53 countries with 1.8 billion citizens, one-third of the world's population. It does not have a formal charter but promotes peace, democracy, the rule of law, equality for all and to end poverty.
How is that different from what Fiji's new PM announced two days ago?
Or, is it different because he speaks for himself and not the British corporate empire?
It condemned the bloodless coup earlier this week saying it was a serious violation of Commonwealth principles. Suspension will mean the end of technical assistance programmes and could damage trade.
For a few British crumbs, they complain about a completely bloodless coup - where the hell is their condemnation of the illegal war started by their former colonizers, that's (so far) claimed over half a million lives???
“If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”
Any man with an ounce of dignity would bite the hand that feeds him, once he realizes that the other hand bleeds him.
