Former CIA officer questions EU motives in Syria

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU and US intervention in Syria is designed to harm Iran and to protect Israel and Lebanese Christians, not Syrian people, according to Robert Baer, a retired CIA officer with experience of the region.

Speaking in an interview with EUobserver, Baer, a senior CIA field officer in Lebanon and Syria in the 1980s and 1990s and a writer on international security affairs, said EU and US sanctions might weaken the Syrian regime but will not stop it from killing people in the current crisis.

"It will make Syria more isolated and economically unstable. But the Alawites [the ruling Muslim sect in Syria] are not going to succumb to outside pressure for democratic reform because they think this would lead to a sectarian civil war [with the Sunni Muslim majority] ... [Syrian President] Bashar Assad thinks that if he shows weakness, if he loses control of any city for any length of time, then it's the end of his regime."

The EU on Friday (24 June) imposed travel bans and asset freezes on four Syrian regime members and three Iranians. The move comes on top of previous EU sanctions against 23 regime members and similar US measures.

The Iranians are senior officers in the Revolutionary Guards said to be "providing equipment and support" for Syrian repression: brigadier commander Mohammad Ali Jafari; major general Qasem Soleimaini; and Hossein Taeb.

It also imposed a ban on four companies said to be funding the Syrian rulers: Bena Properties; Al Mashreq Investment Fund; Military Housing Establishment; and Hamcho International.

Greetings to Sullivan, whose comments I have enjoyed here at WUFYS for years.

This article seems truthful, but I'm afraid it's an underhanded attempt to advance Western distortions about Syria.

Let’s take it item by item.

[1] “EU and US sanctions might weaken the Syrian regime but will not stop it from killing people in the current crisis.”

I challenge Mr. Baer to show me one example – one single example -- in which anyone from the Syrian police or Syrian government has killed, harmed, or mistreated any unarmed protester since the “Arab spring” began this year. Just one example please.

Baer is like Robert Fisk. He sounds “progressive,” but he is a shill for Israeli and Western elitists. He parrots their lies. Once in a great while Baer (like Fisk) exposes a particle truth in order to maintain a semblance of legitimacy.

For instance, Baer questioned the Bush regime’s claims regarding the U.S. raid on the Syrian town of al-Sukariya near the Iraq-Syria border (26 Oct 2008) in which soldiers arrived in four helicopers, murdered seven innocent civilians, and wounded two more before returning to Iraq. The Bush regime authoritzed this attack to prevent any chance of a subsequent Obama reapproachment with Syria, and it worked. Having coopeated with the US “war on terror” for eight years, the Syrian people and government were so outraged by this murderous U.S. raid that they kicked all American nationals out of Syria (about 10,000 of them).

Other than that, however, Baer spouts nothing but lies and distortions.

[[SIDE NOTE: Before 9-11 the various U.S. Special Forces groups had a general rule to never eliminate a target until they had direct “eyeball contact” with him for at least twenty-four hours. This rule was a product of endless botched raids and counter-productive assassinations in Vietnam. Since 9-11, however, with the “global war on terror,” the USA eliminates anyone based on sheer rumors. This is beginning to cause serious problems, as it did in Vietnam. A recent example was the botched U.S. raid on Pakistan -- 2 May 2011-- which was identical in every detail to the 2008 U.S. raid on Syria. Even the compound was identical, except in Syria the central bulding had not yet been construted. Once again innocent civilians were gunned down. The botched raid on Pakistan, in which the US murdered innocent civilians based on false rumors, so enraged Pakistan that the Obama regime was forced to invent the “we killed bin Laden” lie to legitimize it.]]

[2] “Western sanctions will make Syria more isolated and economically unstable. But the Alawites are not going to succumb to outside pressure for democratic reform because they think this would lead to a sectarian civil war with the Sunni Muslim majority.”

Assad has instituted so many democratic reforms that this commentary would become too long if I listed them all here. I will list them, however, if any WUFYS reader challenges me to. As always, the more reforms Assad pushes through, the more the West claims that Assad has not done any reforms whatever.

Doesn’t it occur to ANYONE that the lies told about Syria are exactly the same lies the West tells about every nation targeted for “regime change”? The masses realize that everything about 9-11, plus the “war on terror,” the Iraq-Afghan-Yemen-Somalia wars, and so on are lies – but with each new attack, such as Libya and Syria, the masses fall for the same old lies again and again, over and over. It’s the same phenomenon we see with regard to Nazi Germany. Jews lie about everything, yet even “anti-Zionists” believe every Jewish lie about Hitler and the Nazis. Even “progressive” and “anti-war” web sites believe every lie about Libya and Syria. Even Ralph Nader calls Kadafy a “brutal dictator.”

[3] “President Bashar Assad thinks that if he shows weakness, if he loses control of any city for any length of time, then it's the end of his regime."

Nice try, but Assad is very popular in Syria. (He speaks fluent English, by the way, and his wife is from England. Kadafy also speaks English.) Syria is, however, under the same economic pressure that affects us all, caused by the banker-engineered global depression. This, plus the endless terror attacks sponsored by Israel in the south and Turkey in the north (both overseen by the USA) have caused much social stress in Syria. Tourism accounted for 15 percent of Syria’s economy, but has fallen to zero, not only because Syria doesn’t know who is a genuine tourist, and who is a potential terrorist or journalist-CIA plant, but also because Western governments harass any tourist who visits Syria.

Next will come Western sanctions on Syria’s oil and gas.

That said, oil is only one reason for the Western campaign against Syria, just as oil is only one reason for the NATO attack on Libya.

Syria has been targeted for five interlocking reasons:

>> Syria’s government (like Libya’s) does not participate in the global banking system.

>> The Russian naval base at Tartus (in the Mediterranean) must be eliminated.

>> The alliance between Syria, Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas must be broken.

>> Iran and Russia must be further isolated.

>>Syria must surrender its oil and gas. (Syria is #32 in world oil production. It produces 440k barrels of oil per day, refines about 240k barrels a day, and has at least 3.16 billion barrels of crude in the ground.)

The attack on Syria and Libya is all part of the same global war. In every instance or place, whether at home or abroad, whether in Libya or California or Wisconsin or Greece or Ireland or Syria, the thrust of the attack is the same: to do away with subsistence-level guarantees, or social safety net programs, and redistribute national and global resources in favor of the rich and powerful -- especially in favor of finance capital and war profiteers. That means bringing every nation under the heel of the global bankers and global corporations. It means sub-minimum-wage sweatshops for a handful of the masses, and permanent poverty for the rest.

We are literally in a world war, but it is not like the last world war. Its winners are not the American people at the expense of foreigners. The winners are bankers, investors, and corporate executives at the expense of the global masses. The NATO attack on Libya, and the coming NATO attack on Syria, are part of the same global class war.

[4] “The Alawite sect in Syria is allied with Iran, a Shia Muslim power, and Hezbollah, a Shia guerrilla army in Lebanon. The group is known in Israel as the ‘axis of evil.’ But it is also seen as a threat by Sunni Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries.”

Hezbollah is not merely a “guerrilla army." It is a political party in Lebanon’s central government. Evidently Baer doesn't have access to the Internet.

He speaks of a “Shiite Axis,” but this is somewhat misleading. The Alawites are “secular Shiites” who don’t pray five times a day, don't wear traditional Muslim garb, and don't participate in most Muslim customs. In Syria they are allied with Christians and with the Sunni merchant class. Alawites, Christians, and mainstream Sunnis fear and loathe Wahhabi-Salafist extremists (e.g. the Muslim Brotherhood) who are sociopaths. Sunni fanatics are like Southern U.S. Bible-thumpers on crack, combined with the worst kind of greasy biker gangs. They are ultra-racist, ultra-murderous gangsters who live for violence, drugs, and liquor, while calling themselves "Muslims." They care nothing for religion, or Muslim values. They are ignorant wretches who just want power. NATO is using them in Syria against Assad, and in Libya against Kadafy. When NATO is done bombing Libya, NATO will disarm the Benghazi brigands and stomp them like the worthless maggots they are. They are like the “Auk” critters in the “Lord of the Rings” movies, created by the evil “Lord Sauron” (i.e. today’s West). When they have served their purpose, they will be cast back into the sewer that they crawled out of when the lid was opened.

If you think my language is extreme, then you don’t know these Wahhabi-Salafist fanatics, and why everyone hates them so. They are not to be confused with, say, the Shiite Sadrist Movement in Iraq, which is a genuine resistance movement against the Western occupiers, and which avoids committing atrocities whenever possible. By contrast the Wahhabi-Salafist sociopaths revel in atrocities against, well, whoever -- even against each other. These are genuinely sick fucks.

At the bottom of my comments is a link to a video of some of these creeps. These are Benghazi terrorists hacking off the head of a live Kadafy loyalist in Libya. There are other videos on that web site if you’re in the mood for a gore-fix. And remember, these exact same maggots from eastern Libya have performed most beheadings in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Chechnya.

Returning to this article, Baer follows the same tactic as that used by Jews and the Western media: namely inversion and projection. Almost everything you hear about Libya or Syria (or Nazi Germany for that matter) is the exact opposite of the truth. If you want to know what Jews are up to, pay attention to what they falsely accuse others of.

For example, you’ve heard the claim that Kadafy hands out Viagra to his loyalists so they can commit rapes. This is an inversion. In reality the CIA hands out Viagra to older members of the eastern “rebels” so they may help rape women from neutral or pro-Kadafy familes.  This is done because in Islamic culture, rape is a form of terrorism and collective punishment. When a women is raped, her entire family becomes permanently “unclean” and stigmatized. This is why rape is a capital offense in most Muslim nations. The Viagra story surfaced when journalists saw Libyan “rebels” carrying packets of the pills. When asked where the pills came from, the “rebels” claimed that they got the pills from Kadafy loyalist tanks hit by NATO. Everything inside the tanks was charred black – except of course the Viagra packets.

Yes, everything in the Western media is the exact opposite of the truth, and Mr. Baer helps spread the lies and distortions.

[5] “Baer said the EU decision to include sanctions on the Iranian officers - a UK initiative - is designed to further stigmatize Iran in the wider campaign to stop it building nuclear weapons.”

Nuclear power is a mere ruse. If Iran were to give up all aspects of nuclear technology, then the campaign against Iran would simply shift gears. Iran has a lot of oil. It has a strategic position, plus 75 million people who can be reduced to sweatshops, with their economy absorbed into the West’s casino-economy that is impoverishing us all. Most of all, the Iran-Syria alliance is one of the few in the world that has not yet been absorbed by the international banking cartels. Iran must be crushed and absorbed, as must Venezuela and all the left-leaning nations of South America. Same with any nation in Africa (e.g. Zimbabwe or the Ivory Coast) that seeks to chart its own course.

[6] “If Iran is involved in Syria, it's at a minor level, like blocking the internet.”

The Internet is not blocked in Syria, although some porn sides are filtered. One of Assad’s many reforms was to lift all restrictions on Facebook.

Syrian Internet access is primarily controlled by the state-owned SyriaTel. On 3 June 2011, US-supported terrorists managed to shut down two-thirds of Syria's Internet service, but Assad’s government got everything back online within 10 ½ hours.

Syria's government doesn’t need to censor political content, since Assad is so popular. This is not Egypt or Yemen or Tunisia, all of which had US-allied dictators, and still have US-allied military juntas. Nor is Syria a brutal monarchy like the Gulf states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Arabia, and the UAE – soon to include the kingdoms of Jordan and Morocco.) Syria is not even like Iran, where there is currently a power struggle between Ahmadinejad and the clerics. Syria is most like Venezuela. It allies with Russia and Iran as a defensive measure.

[7] “At the end of the day, it's Syrian tanks and Syrian artillery which is slaughtering people.”

Baer is trying to point out that Iran is not involved in Syria, but he does so by claiming that the Syrian government is “slaughtering people.” Does Baer have any proof of this “slaughtering”? One iota? One shred? One photo? One document? No since it doesn’t happen -- but then, Baer doesn’t need any proof, since he is a Western shill. It’s like the Jews and their “holocaust” lies. No proof is needed, since the holo-hoax is a faith-based cult.

[8] “In another sign that the EU and USA main motive is to weaken the Shia axis, Baer noted they have not taken action against its enemies, such as Saudi-sponsored rulers in Bahrain and Yemen, who are also guilty of brutal repression.”

Yes, because the “khalijees” (Gulf Arabs) have oil, they are allied with Israel and the West, and they have all made deals to be middle men for Libya’s oil when NATO is done bombing Kadafy. Every media outlet owned by these oil sheiks is as full of anti-Kadafy and anti-Assad lies, e.g. Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya, Al-Hayat, Asharq Al-Awsat and so on. To sort out Arabic newspapers, we only need to check who owns them. For example, Al-Quds Al-Arabi is not filled with lies, since it is published in London by Palestinian expatriates.

I despise the Gulf monarchies. I know them. I’ve been to Kuwait. They have gotten the monarchies of Jordan and Morocco to join them by promising jobs, new investment, and security ties, little of which will actually come true. Instead, the Gulf kings are giving personal bribes to the Jordanian king and Moroccon king. Two weeks ago the Saudis wrote a $400 million check to Jordan’s king Abdullah III, their first assistance in years. The Saudis also gave the military junta in Cairo $4 billion to crush popular reforms in Egypt. In mid-march the Saudi royal family sent more than 1,000 troops to crush the pro-democracy demonstrations in Bahrain, which is home to the US Fifth Fleet.

[9] “Baer added that France, the former colonial power in Lebanon and Syria, is mainly interested in protecting its old friends, the Maronite Christians in Lebanon: ‘They don't want to see the roof blown off Lebanon because they still feel responsible for the Maronites. They are tightly wrapped up in Lebanon’.”

France is playing the same globalist game, with Libya serving as one of the pawns. As for Lebanese Maronites, they are only one sect of Lebanese Christians. They lean toward the West because their ancestry is non-Arab, and they are allied with the Vatican in Rome – which is thoroughly infiltrated by Jewish interests, and which again plays the globalist game. (In 99 percent of all cases throughout the world, the Vatican sides with elitist globalists against the masses.)

There other Christian sects in Lebanon, and they are allied with Syria’s Assad at this point, since they know the West wants to use them as pawns in its globalist game. Such sects include Melkite Greek Catholics, Greek Orthodox Christians, Copts, Protestants, Armenian Catholics, Armenian Orthodox, Assyrian Church of the East, Chaldean Catholics, Syriac Catholicsm and Syriac Orthodox. Together they comprise 40% of Lebanon’s population. (Lebanese Druze play their own separate game, and their alliances constantly shift. At the moment they too lean toward Assad.)

To repeat, this is ultimately not about attacking Libya, Syria, or Iran. It’s about the forces of global capital attacking the global masses. In some places the weapon is debt. In other places the weapon is union-busting, race-bating, bombs / bullets, terrorism, the “war on drugs,” and so on.

[10] “Baer noted that Turkey is also trying to weaken the Shia alliance in order to become the pre-eminent power in the region. ‘I'm still talking to my Syrian contacts and they are quite convinced that weapons are coming in to the opposition, not just from the Sunnis in Lebanon and through Iraq but also from Turkey,’ Baer said.”

Yes, what a shame that Turkey has re-entered the Israeli / Western sphere, despite the freedom flotilla massacre of 31 May 2010. For years Russia and Syria worked hard to get Turkey to chart its own course, but now Turkey is assisting the NATO attack on Libya, and is preparing to help NATO attack Syria.

Ban Ki Moon, the ultra-corrupt UN general secretary, supports the capitalist wars, and is now demanding UN sanctions against Syria (not to be confused with EU sanctions and USA sanctions). Moon also says he will do whatever is necessary to prevent the Palestinian bid for statehood from coming to a UN vote in September.  He has also condemned the Freedom Flotilla #2. As a reward for all this, Moon was recently “elected” to a second five years as head of the UN.

Western media pundits are whining that NATO does not yet seem ready to bomb Syria. Some of these are mere idiots. Others are shills, trying to stoke militarism among the Western masses. The truth is that the forces of world capital do whatever they want, whenever they want, without explanation. They don’t even bother making excuses any more. When they want to start bombing, they ignore their own constitutions and their own peoples.  The USA is currently engaged in at least seven wars (Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, and more generally the global war on terror). What is one more war against Syria, plus another against Iran? When Obama came into power, there were roughly 35,000 American troops in Afghanistan. Within two years, he tripled that number.

The masses are silent. Anti-war protests only happen when a nation has a middle class, which is now extinct. Even if the USA goes to war against Iran, the masses will say nothing. They’re busy just trying to survive. Besides, the masses believe whatever the media tells them, even when the media is caught lying. The masses don’t start to question the lies until years or decades after the crimes are committed.

Some time after NATO is done bombing Libya, NATO will use two pretexts to start bombing Syria. Just as the current terrorist campaigns against Syria’s government come from the south (through Jordan) and the north (through Turkey), one NATO bombing pretext will be from the south, and the other from the north.

 a) The Southern Pretext.

Russia and China will not agree to any UN Security Council resolution against Syria, since any resolution, no matter how vague or benign, will open the door for bombing. We saw this with Kosovo and Libya, in which “humanitarian” missions to “protect civilians” were used to bomb civilians.

Therefore the West is now preparing to renew the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Golan Heights. On May 15 and June 5, Israeli troops fired across the border into Syria crowds who were not protesting against the Syrian government, but where marking the anniversary of the 1967 Middle East War. The Jews killed many Syrians, but the Western media claimed that the Syrian government did it.

The UN Security Council will claim that “anti-government demonstrations” in Syria have spread to Israel. Since Israel must be protected at all costs, the UN “peacekeeping mission” in Lebanon will use the Golan Heights to begin shelling Syria, in order to maintain “regional security.”

 b) The northern Pretext.

Turkey will engineer a border skirmish that opens the door for NATO’s aerial bombing of Syria. Ankara is already rattling its sabers, and Turkish aircraft are increasingly violating Syrian airspace to probe Syrian responses. Turkey is also creating large military camps close to the Syrian border.

Since Turkey is a NATO member, any military conflict involving Turkey (regardless of who starts it) will automatically involve all of NATO. Hence: bombing.

Already NATO is transferring 4,000 ground troops from the US Army Garrison in Heidelberg, plus another 1,286 personnel from a NATO base in Retamares (Madrid) to the Izmir Air Station, which is NATO’s oldest stronghold in Turkey.

Meanwhile NATO will move a command center from Lisbon to Izmir, Turkey.

Izmir (formerly Smyrna) is Turkey’s third largest city (pop 4 million) and largest port after Istanbul.  It is located on the Dardanelles Strait. Turkey’s capitol of Istanbul is located on the Bosphorous Strait. Both these Straights are under Turkish control, and together they form the only link between the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Hence the NATO plan is to finish bombing Libya and start bombing Syria while bottling up the Russian fleet.

Two weeks ago the USS Monterey (a guided-missile cruiser) participated in “Sea Breeze,” a joint naval operation with Ukraine in the Black Sea. The ship moved close to Russia’s shoreline to test Russian responses, and the Russians protested vigorously. Then the Monterey moved to the Mediterranean to assist the attack on Libya.

[11] “Baer predicted that if the conflict in Syria escalates, security chiefs will stage a coup ‘sacrificing’ Assad in order to cut a deal with the opposition, as happened in Egypt.”

Oh come on. The West sacrificed Mubarak because he had become senile and useless. The Egyptian military sacrificed Mubarak because Egypt was crippled by nationwide strikes. (The Cairo demonstrations were inconsequential.) Egypt’s ruling military junta continues to get $3 billion a year from the USA, plus a recent $4 billion gift from the Saudis. Mubarak has been replaced by the junta. Same dictatorship; different faces.

Syria is totally different. Assad is popular with the masses and the military, and is engaged in MASSIVE reforms (none of which I have listed here). He replaced his entire cabinet. The “conflict” Baer speaks off is caused by terrorists coming in from outside. Using lies and threats, they convinced all those “refugees” to leave Syria and go to Turkey. Now the refugees want to return to Syria, but they are being held in Turkish detention camps. The  terrorists, and the Turkish government, won’t let them return, since “refugees” are needed for the Western propaganda effort against the Syrian government.

Meanwhile the West makes no mention of the millions of refugees in Syria from the Western war on Iraq, nor all the Palestinian refugees from Palestine.

[12] “An EU diplomat backed up some of Baer’s analysis, saying EU sanctions will not work because Assad still has good relations with China, Iran, Russia, and Latin America.

‘When you talk to Syrian diplomats, they are relaxed. Life in Damascus is pretty normal. We in the EU don't really know what our objectives are, but if it's regime change, it will take more than sanctions, he explained.”

Yes, bombing will be needed to kill Asad, just as it was needed to kill Kadafy. However the Western sanctions against Syria are indeed working. Life in Damascus is gradually becoming more stressful, since business is way, way down. It’s all part of the Western strategy of wearing down Assad’s government as he chases Western-sponsored terrorists, and deals with things like the loss of tourist revenue and Turkish saber-rattling.

This is a war of attrition. When the West feels that Assad is weak enough, NATO will start bombing. Russia and China will likely be too cowardly to respond. China lets itself be pushed out of every pace that has oil. If they do respond, we may see Armageddon, perhaps in 2012 after Obama is re-installed for a second term.

[13] The EU diplomat said, “"We have reports that Wahhabists who are not necessarily controlled by any state, are coming into Syria from Iraq and from Saudi Arabia to create chaos. Inside Syria, there are snipers shooting at demonstrators who are not controlled by Assad, but by the deep state, and other snipers who are shooting at both demonstrators and police.”

Deep state? Jeezus. Syria is not Turkey.  ALL of the snipers are Israeli and Western-backed terrorists from outside. (“Western-backed” includes Arabia and the Gulf oil kingdoms.)

Look, the destabilization playbook never changes, okay? It’s easy. You pay a few terrorists to shoot some policemen from rooftops, torch some buildings, put on military uniforms and fire at crowds -- and then let the ensuing chaos wear down the government. We’ve seen this countless times around the world. The USA did this in 2002 when it tried to depose Venezuela’s Chavez.

I would love to expose all the specific lies and hoaxes the West has staged to vilify Syria, but my comments have already become too lengthy. (And don’t get me started on Libya!)

Speaking of Libya, check out how the peaceful US-backed “rebels” behave there. See the videos below before the US government has them removed from the Internet. (Video download may be slow.)

In addition to the beheading, watch how the “rebels” force Kadafy loyalists to eat body parts of other Kadafy loyalists that the “rebels” have chopped up. This is why the loyalists are fighting to the death, despite over 5,000 NATO air strikes (soon to be followed by NATO “peacekeeping” troops). Libya had the lowest living standards in all of Africa under the British-installed King Idris, and then rose to the highest in Africa with Kadafy. Now the West will take all that away, and plunge Libya back to its former status.

Everyone in government and media who repeats the lies (including Baer) is equally guilty of these atrocities...
