Site-blocking law dubbed 'Ireland's Sopa' to pass without parliamentary vote

Ireland is soon to have a law similar to Sopa passed that would give music and movie companies the power to force Irish ISPs to block access to sites suspected of having copyright infringing material on them.

Irish citizens won't have a chance to lobby their democratic representatives because there won't be a vote on the law -- snappily named "S.I. No. of 2011 European Communities (Copyright and Related Rights) Regulations 2011" -- in the Irish Parliament. Instead the law is being enacted by ministerial order because it is being prepared in the form of a Statutory Instrument.

The law could mean that judges can order Irish ISPs -- such as Eircom and UPC -- as well as mobile networks to block access to social networking sites where an individual user has shared infringing material.

Typical groveling by the Irish government to its financial and corporate lords. But when has it ever been different? The Irish government has always been corrupt. That's why the British were able to exploit Ireland for centuries. Of course, if Ireland got rid of government corruption, then England would invade to "restore peace, order, and security" (i.e. restore the corruption).

I like how this law will not be voted on in parliament. Even Mexico's elitists as not so brazen.

My ancestors left Ireland in the 1800s. I can see why. But then, every place has pluses and minuses, aye? Many Americans dream of moving abroad to....wherever. But I've traveled all over the world, and it's the same wherever I've been. Government corruption. It's in the nature of all large societies.

I've always maintained that Ireland's independence was nothing more than an illusion. While this irks some nationalist friends of mine, the truth always hurts.  The Republic of Ireland didn't win independence. The 26 counties were given the illusion of sovereignty but this illusion existed very much under the terms of the British, or rather, the criminal banking dynasties the British have served since Oliver Cromwell gave them free reign in return for their "support".

Yes, well, the Irish have tried many times to gain true independence, but they have always been stabbed in the back by their own elites. During the Rebellion of 1798, for example, the masses tried to throw off British tyranny (and they even had French help), but the Irish masses were crushed by the Irish landowners (the so-called “nobility.”)

Of course, such treachery happens all over the world. Always has. Probably always will. And in rare cases where a person gains central power, and truly does love the masses and the country, the masses vilify him for all time (e.g. Hitler).

What irks me is how history is always written by the victors. Independence fighters in America were “heroes” because they defeated the British. Independence fighters in Ireland are “terrorists” because they didn’t truly defeat the British.

Anyway, Irish politicians now compete madly for the bankers’ favor. Whatever the bankers ask for, Irish politicians not only agree, but offer twice or thrice what the bankers demand.
