Vatican orders Holocaust-denying bishop Richard Williamson to recant

#800000">Pope 'did not know about bishop's views' when he agreed to lift his excommunication and those of three other conservative bishops

The Vatican today told a Holocaust-denying bishop he must publicly recant before being readmitted into the Roman Catholic church.

In a statement, officials also said Pope Benedict XVI did not know about Bishop Richard Williamson's views when he agreed to lift his excommunication, and those of three other ultra-conservative bishops, last week.

The statement was issued by the Vatican's secretariat of state a day after the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, urged the Pope to make a clearer rejection of Holocaust denials, saying clarification from the Vatican had been inadequate.

Merkel said she had been forced to break her own rule of not criticising or commenting on internal church matters because the issue was a "question of principle".

She called on the Pope to "unambiguously clarify" his position.

"When a decision by the Vatican gives rise to the impression that the Holocaust may be denied, this cannot be allowed to stand ... it's a matter of affirming very clearly on the part of the Pope and the Vatican that there must be no denial here," she said.

The chancellor added that "as a Protestant Christian" she was "encouraged" that many voices in the Catholic church were also urging the Vatican to explain its position.

Cardinal Karl Lehmann, a former chairman of the Conference of German Bishops, the highest post in the Catholic church in Germany, said the decision to rehabilitate Williamson had been "a disaster for all Holocaust survivors".

He called on the Pontiff to apologise.

The reinstated bishops are the followers of Marcel Lefebvre, who rejected the reforms of the Vatican council and ordained the bishops without the authorisation of Rome, leading to their excommunication.

They formed the Society of St Pius X, which retained the pre-reform stance of the church that Jews shared collective guilt for Christ's death.

One of the four, Williamson, said in an interview with Swedish television last month: "I believe there were no gas chambers," claiming that no more than 300,000 Jews died in concentration camps.

He later apologised in a blog posting for the "unnecessary distress" he had caused the Pope, but failed to withdraw his remarks.

The Pope necame embroiled in a fresh row this weekend after promoting an ultra-conservative Austrian clergyman, Gerhard Maria Wagner, to the status of bishop.

Wagner had been quoted as saying thatHurricane Katrina was an act of "divine retribution" for New Orleans' sexual permissiveness.

Can someone tell me when emphatic maintainance & unrelenting support of the Jewish Holocaust (c) become a sacred doctrine of Catholicism? I mean, seriously, it seems to me the Pope gets more passionate about this than the (real) Holocaust of Christians. Also, not a word about the Gaza Genocide....something occurring NOW, btw.

OT, but...if you take a look at the links at the bottom of The Guardian's page, you'll notice an article headline about the Pope sparking "controversy by defending heterosexuality". SInce when is defending heterosexuality considered "controversial?" The GLBTF agenda really is taking over....

This is what you call a classic blackmail case and either way the Pope goes is irrelevant. The fact is we have the least trustworthy people, religion or whatever you call it on earth ordering an established religion what they have to believe.
Anyone can see this is the case.

... to back up the conventional, politically correct notion that exactly 6 million Jews died no matter the reductions of the estimated figures of casualties at the individual concentration camps, this issue cannot be verified by human logic.

Holocaust is an article of faith, a Judaic religious reality and it has to be addressed as such.

Therefore, the Pope's introduction of this new article of faith becomes an issue of Christian Catholic dogma.

The Pope has demonstrated his utter fallibility which he shares with the first bishop of Rome, so he is in good company.  However, by introducing political correctness as part of Christian doctrine the Pope has effectively destroyed the Catholic Church.  It would be wise of him to resign to stem the exodus which will start, presumably with Bishop Williamson as one of the first to leave the sinking ship, possibly to start the Second Reformation based on truth and in rejection of corruption.

Christians should be Christ like, kind and forgiving, they should turn their other cheek, but they are not  to act like goy cattle.  They hold responsibility for the way they manage their talents, and there is no more important talent than to use the brain God has provided.  A Christian is not a naive person who would believe in just anything. Christians know that they need to show discernment and beware of false prophets.

May everybody wake up from their slumber to recognize the difference between truth and falsehood, between good and evil.

This situation should not be an encouragement of confrontation but be a cause for serious reflection and prayer that all Christians may remain united in one true faith.

Yes, dear friends... the Jews have gladly furnished you with a wide range of semitic "God" to worship. "Oy, vot choices ve haf for you Goys!"

You don't like the Jew hanging on the cross?

Fine!  Then adore one of the Jews hanging on the magazine rack at the supermarket check out counter. There are so many!

Or take your pick from MTV.

And of course, whatever Jew you choose to worship, don't forget the holy Six Million™.

Jews! Not a very good idea for our tired old planet!

1. A sense of the dignity of the human person has been impressing itself more and more deeply on the consciousness of contemporary man, and the demand is increasingly made that men should act on their own judgment, enjoying and making use of a responsible freedom, not driven by coercion but motivated by a sense of duty. The demand is likewise made that constitutional limits should be set to the powers of government, in order that there may be no encroachment on the rightful freedom of the person and of associations. This demand for freedom in human society chiefly regards the quest for the values proper to the human spirit. It regards, in the first place, the free exercise of religion in society. This Vatican Council takes careful note of these desires in the minds of men. It proposes to declare them to be greatly in accord with truth and justice. To this end, it searches into the sacred tradition and doctrine of the Church-the treasury out of which the Church continually brings forth new things that are in harmony with the things that are old.

First, the council professes its belief that God Himself has made known to mankind the way in which men are to serve Him, and thus be saved in Christ and come to blessedness. We believe that this one true religion subsists in the Catholic and Apostolic Church, to which the Lord Jesus committed the duty of spreading it abroad among all men. Thus He spoke to the Apostles: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have enjoined upon you" (Matt. 28: 19-20). On their part, all men are bound to seek the truth, especially in what concerns God and His Church, and to embrace the truth they come to know, and to hold fast to it.

This Vatican Council likewise professes its belief that it is upon the human conscience that these obligations fall and exert their binding force. The truth cannot impose itself except by virtue of its own truth, as it makes its entrance into the mind at once quietly and with power.

"Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly."

Why is it that world leaders seem more concerned with the Pope's handling of a "holocaust denier" than they are with their handling of pedophile priests?  I'm just sayin' ...

When Talmudic scholars are called upon to repudiate the anti-Christian passages of that text, the Pope can be asked to be more sensitive to Jews.  When Israel changes it's laws that can send a person to jail for 5 years for distributing the New Testament to a Jew, then the Pope can address the denial of the holocaust.

Imagine -- a group who denies Christ is asking to punish someone who denies the holocaust.  How ironic.

For the record, I think Jews completely have the right to deny anything they want and that there should be no punishment or discrimination for it.  I believe in free will and the freedom of (or from) religion.  But, I also think that those who deny the holocaust have the same rights.  The truth can speak for itself.  It needs no laws to justify it.
