Folks, a couple of things on the origin of the AP from www.ap.org. Was digging for info on George Kennan who had converted Mark Twain from a supporter to an enemy of the Romanovs.  Kennan had ties to the AP and I think I know how the rest of the script reads.  Any info on GK and Catherine "Mother of the Revolution" Breshkovsky appreciated.  I was a bit shocked since quotes suggest Twain knew the evils of newspapers and banker types.  Seems odd he would have fallen for the "horror" pablum.

Anyone know the background of Moses Yale Beach?

The main surface point in Pyle's piece is that the AP was formed in 1846 not 1848.  Big revolutions in Europe in 1848,* so I'm assuming there's a very sharp interest in quickly creating a news organ with "profound influence" to foster a "national outlook" on a "national scale" in the next host body.  Thoughts?  Here are a few excerpts:

1846 - The News Cooperative Takes Shape

In the spring of 1846, Moses Yale Beach (1800-68), publisher of The New York Sun, establishes a pony express to deliver news of the Mexican War...The papers that joined Beach’s venture were: The Journal of Commerce, The Courier and Enquirer, The New York Herald, and The Express. The first dispatches from the Mexican War are carried by the Sun on May 29, 1846.

In the year 1863 he published his work entitled “Open Answers”, in which he outlined a plan of revolution for the German workers. Since then he worked tirelessly for a “Socialist” crusade, which was directed at the rebellion of the workers. For this purpose he published a further work under the title “Capital and Labour.”

“Gougenot des Mousseaux reports the following occurrence, which confirms the ensuing statements: ‘With the breaking out again of the revolution of 1848, I had connections with a Jew, who out of vanity betrayed the secrets of the secret societies of which he was a member.
