I imagine that you forgot the part about being free from these shortcomings yourself before cautioning others regarding them (insulting others). It is pretty much required to do something yourself before telling someone else to do it (or not do it as the case is here).

I will caution you however, the Quran doesn't say to not insult the religion of another person. It says not to insult their "Illah" or their "God". Now, I wouldn't do that knowingly but in the case of a statue, I was under the impression that most Christians are well aware that they are not supposed to pay homage to a statue (even though we demonstrated that some people do get very upset if you insult their statues).
