Congratulations to the Palestinians for at long last being able to put out the truth. However, a word of caution.
Israel has been finally been embarrassed at the behavior of settlers in the West Bank as stories leak out about the truth of the “occupation”. Giving the Palestinians 30 cameras by a human rights group is a splendid PR move on the part of the Israelis. They can't deny the stories that have come out so they can now “co-operate” in letting the Palestinians put out their “perspective.”
But it's not about perspective; it's about truth.
I noticed a few things.
The story focuses on the settlers, who for all their brutality, commit a fraction of the crimes against the Palestinians that the IDF does.
It was mentioned in the story that the footage could be urned over to the army so that they could see what goes. This is ridiculous. It's the army that's causing the trouble. They know exactly what goes on as they're the major perpetrators. Here's an eye-opener. The number of Palestinians killed in the Intifada (since 2000) is 5388, according to Miftah. The number killed by settler is 75 while the number killed in extra-judicial killings by the IDF is over a 1000. That number doesn't include military operations just military assassinations. The army rarely indites soldiers for their killing of civilians. So is the gift of cameras another attempt to bury most of the story while pretending to cover it? The Israelis have the military clout and their co-religionists control the media there and here so, be careful.
It politically current to criticize the settlers. So far as I can tell for two reasons. The first being that you can place the blame on “religious extremists” and pretend their behavior is not the policy of the government and the second being that you can deflect the attention away from the larger story - the stealth of Palestine and the genocide of the Palestinians people.
