Is Imran Khan a political zero?
IMRAN KHAN was ‘a cricket hero’ but he is today criticised as ‘a political zero’. His hunger strike in support of political freedom for the pro-democracy activists of Pakistan brought him in the limelight. Yet there wasn’t much of a protest at his arrest, from the people of Pakistan. At least, we have not seen much anger as it was expressed against the ordeals suffered by Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto.
Imran Khan draws more attention from tabloids and foreign newspapers. This is more so because of the support expressed by his ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith, who still feels proud to call herself ‘Khan’ and who protested in London against her ex husband’s imprisonment.
Imran was a devout defender of Islam when he committed himself to politics. Jemima converted to Islam and took the name of Haiqa Khan. But Imran’s marriage to Jemima and his Western ways of life (especially in his Oxford days) seemed to have been major obstacles in the way his becoming a political hero in Pakistan. The political opponent of Imran linked Jemima with her Jewish heritage, as her father was a Jew.
Jemima was never regarded as one belonging to the Muslim community and her glamorous Westernised style was never favourable for Imran’s acceptability in Pakistan. While Musharraf declared Emergency, Imran was the first the most prominent target for arrest. During the visit of Bush in 2006 to Pakistan, Imran had been put for a short time under house arrest.
Imran himself is very modern minded but when he speaks as a politician he speaks very conservatively like a Muslim fundamentalist. He is highly critical of modernisation of Pakistan and the Western influences. Therefore, he is hateful of tourism, which he is afraid might affect the local culture. He also feels that military will cooperate in his political activities. He expresses his commitment to home grown system and culture that is rooted in Pakistan’s history. The country, in his opinion, is ruled by a few Westernised elite. The irony of the situation is that this crusade of Imran Khan against Westernisation is not fully credible.
Imran has admitted that because he was attacking the corrupt elite his wife became a "soft target". Because of her Jewish blood, he said, " she was accused of being part of a Zionist conspiracy to take over Pakistan. I thought this was so absurd that I did not even take it seriously but it took a big toll on her."

Jemima Khan, the estranged wife of Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, has recalled some of her bitter experiences in the Islamic nation where religion is 'used to justify political attacks.'
Jemima, remembering some of her 'not-so-happy' experiences in Pakistan, said that during the 1997 election campaign, the outspoken Imran was widely accused of being part of a Zionist conspiracy because of his marriage to a person 'with a Jewish father and Jewish maiden name.'
'My then-husband had an untarnished political record, but a wife with a Jewish father and a Jewish maiden name was his Achilles heel,' Jemima noted.
She said that earlier in 1997 Benazir Bhutto had alluded to the claims of Imran being a part of Zionist conspiracy on national television.
'A bogus cheque for 40 million, supposedly from my father to fund Imran's campaign, appeared in all the Pakistani newspapers. The fact that he failed to win a single seat, partly thanks to the smear campaign, put paid to the accusation,' she wrote, adding, 'religion has often been used in Muslim countries for political ends.'

Thanks for your interesting comments. Imran and his wife have indeed been an interesting couple. Putting the details of names and 'roles' apart, what is most interesting to me is that the US seems now to be regularly bombing its ally Pakistan! Isn't that what it did with Iraq? Wasn't Saddam the US darling ally against Iran just a few years ago? Notice also that Obama is definitely aiming at Pakistan... and now US troops are being shifted from Iraq to Afghanistan considering the miserable situation there. Afghanistan is after all a major cross road.
So what is it with the US? Iraq, Afghanistan or Iran... or all three with what that entails? I think that we might be in for interesting times.

What was interesting to me were not McCain or Obama's general comments... because their positions are known to us. What I found interesting was the non-chalance with which McCain readily admitted that the Marriott bombing was a message to the Americans. There are so many of those messages taking place around the world, only it is rare to hear American officials admit them. They would usually have their army of media invent and distribute some kind of interesting fraudulant story primarily to keep the eyes of the American tax payers shut to the state of the fading and arrogant American "empire"...
