Protesters and regime supporters skirmished in a second day of rock-throwing battles at a central Cairo square on Thursday while new lawlessness spread around the city.
New looting and arson erupted, and gangs of thugs supporting President Hosni Mubarak attacked reporters, foreigners and rights workers while the army rounded up foreign journalists.
Egyptian army tanks and soldiers were deployed between groups of pro and anti-government protesters in the square on Thursday, moving to prevent further violence. The army fanned out to separate the two sides and allowed thousands more protesters to enter their camp.
